How to Choose a High-Quality Olive Oil

Olive oil, when it’s high-quality)  is one of the healthiest oils you can use. It’s rich in antioxidants, supports heart and brain health, lowers inflammation, and supports healthy hormones.

But not all olive oils are created equal. Unfortunately, many brands on the market are poor quality or cut with cheap, inflammatory seed oils that can do more harm than good. That’s why it’s important to know what to look for when choosing the right one.

Here’s what to look for in a high-quality olive oil:

  • Single origin: Choose an olive oil that comes from one specific region or country, rather than being a blend from multiple places. This ensures better quality and transparency.

  • Dark glass bottle: Olive oil is sensitive to light, which can damage its antioxidants and healthy fats… and you don’t want that. A dark glass bottle protects the oil and keeps it fresher for longer.

  • Cold pressed: This means the oil was extracted without heat or chemicals, preserving its nutrients and delicate flavor, and not damaging the oil’s benefits.

  • Extra virgin: This is the highest quality classification, meaning it’s pure, unrefined, and has the most health benefits.

A note on price: High-quality olive oil usually costs more to produce, so if you see one that’s very cheap, it’s often a red flag. High-quality olive oils will typically cost anywhere from $11-35.

My recommendation I use and love: While there are many out there if you take the time to shop around, one brand I love is Terra Delyssa Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (which you can also find for an amazing price at Costco in Canada and the US!)
