How to Relax in Stressful Times
Stress is a huge one for a lot of people. Life throws so much at us, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Some people are stressed by what’s happening in the world. Others are dealing with personal challenges. And for many, it’s both.
Unfortunately, stress is a silent killer when it comes to our health. It takes a serious toll on both our mind and body, and it’s something we need to be more intentional about managing. Because at the end of the day, we deserve to feel good in life.
When times are stressful:
🚫 Turn off the news.
The news is designed to keep you in a state of fear and anxiety. Many people think they need to watch it to stay informed, but in reality, it’s bad for us and our nervous system. Bad things have always happened and always will. We weren’t meant to process every disaster, tragedy, or conflict happening worldwide—it overloads our nervous system and keeps us in a constant state of stress. Most of whats on the news is meant to scare you and put you in a state of fear. If something is truly important, you’ll hear about it. You don’t need to consume it daily.
🧘♀️ Accept what you can’t change.
There’s always going to be something outside of our control. Dwelling on it only gives it more power over us. Instead, shift your focus to what is within your control—your thoughts, your actions, and how you respond to challenges.
💭 Most things aren’t as bad as we imagine.
Think back to all the times you felt anxious or afraid. Did things turn out as bad as you thought? Probably not. Our minds have a way of exaggerating problems that often never even happen.
🌎 Shift your perspective—The world is improving.
It may seem like things are getting worse, but in many ways, life is better than ever. A few examples:
Women have rights.
Racism and injustice are punishable.
It’s easier than ever to make money (especially online).
We have access to free knowledge at our fingertips.
Medical advances are improving and saving lives.
We can order food with a tap, connect with loved ones across the world, and so much more.
💡 Focus on the good things in your life.
When stress feels overwhelming, shift your attention to the things that bring you joy, gratitude, and peace. Focusing on the good helps you forget about the stress and reminds you that there are still so many beautiful things in your life.
Regulating Your Nervous System & Reducing Stress
Mindset shifts are powerful, but your body also needs practices that calm the nervous system. These are powerful daily practices for regulating the nervous system and reducing stress:
🌿 Spending time in nature
🌎 Grounding your feet on the earth (barefeet on the ground)
🏃♀️ Movement/exercise
😮💨 Deep breathing exercises
🧘♂️ Meditation
🎶 Humming (stimulates the vagus nerve, which calms stress)
Remember, no matter what you're going through, this too shall pass.
