Detox Smoothie

This is a detox-support smoothie recipe that I’ve developed and been using for years, along with many of my clients, family, and friends.

It’s specifically and strategically designed to support the body’s natural detoxification system to remove waste and toxins from the body to help lower inflammation, improve hormone balance and digestion, support fat loss, increase energy, and so much more.

This smoothie basically helps the body clean out the bad stuff so that the body can work and function properly.

A few things to know before trying this smoothie:

While this smoothie is amazing, it may not be suitable for everyone. If you have food sensitivities, histamine issues, or SIBO (an overgrowth of harmful gut bacteria), it may not be ideal right now as it can trigger symptoms. Once your health improves, you may be able to better tolerate it.

How to know if it’s not right for you:

  • If you experience gas, bloating, fatigue, or other negative symptoms after drinking it, that’s a sign to pause for now.

  • If you’re unsure, you can try it and see how your body responds.

How to Properly Consume this Smoothie:

  • This smoothie is made with specific ingredients that work together—don’t add anything extra, as it can take away its benefits.

  • Always drink it on an empty stomach, ideally first thing in the morning.

  • Do not have it after eating or alongside other foods.

  • After drinking, wait 20–30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

  • Drinking water before the smoothie is ok, but avoid having any other food or drinks before – you want to make sure you’re drinking it with a clear system.

SMOOTHIE RECIPE:

This recipe makes 1 smoothie

Equipment Needed:

  • High-speed blender

Ingredients

  • 4 (loosely packed) cups of organic mixed leafy greens (a mix is best but if you can’t find that, spinach, kale, and/or swiss chard all work)

  • 1 cup filtered water

  • 1 apple with skin on (preferrably a sweet variety such as gala, ambrosia, pink lady, honey crisp)

  • 1 small or medium ripe banana (or ½ of a large banana)

  • The fresh juice fromeither half a lemon OR 1 whole lime (do NOT use premade lemon/lime juice)

  • OPTIONAL: a small handful of detoxifying herbs like fresh curly parsley or fresh cilantro

  • DO NOT ADD: any protein powders, fats/oils, nuts, seeds, etc. This takes away the benefits of this smoothie

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and begin processing on low. Gradually move to higher speeds and blend until smooth.

  2. Serve immediately after or refrigerate with a tight lid overnight to have in the morning.

This smoothie is more of a supplement:

This smoothie is more of a supplement rather than a full meal. However, for those who aren’t very hungry in the mornings, it can be a great option to have for a “breakfast”  to provide essential nutrients and gently train the body to develop a morning appetite.

Avoid drinking it cold:

Most people prefer a cold smoothie, but it's actually better for you if it's room temperature. This is because cold drinks, especially in the morning can weaken digestion, which can not only cause bloating, constipation, and digestive issues, but it also impacts hormones. If you make it the night before, take it out of the fridge and let it sit for a bit to help bring it to room temp.

What about the sugar in this smoothie?

Many people ask if this smoothie is too high in sugar, and the answer is no. Here's why: The natural sugar that come in whole fruit isn't something to fear. When you eat fruit in its whole-food form, that sugar comes packaged with fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds. Together, these nutrients help slow the absorption of the natural sugars and support a steadier blood sugar response than foods with added or refined sugars. The natural sugars in fruit provide your body with glucose, which is its most preferred source of fuel.

This smoothie contains about 11 grams of fiber, which helps slow digestion and makes it a lower-glycemic choice than many other smoothies.
